FREENWENCY BIO
No stranger to long flights and warm studios is Freekwency; the prime project and masked moniker of Modern Funk producer Benny Badge. Channeling the creative gusto that lifted producers such as Nick Martinelli and Jellybean Benitez to stardom in the 1980s, the Freekwency sound is both a distinctly fresh and deliciously nostalgic ticket to a time when things were simpler.
Based between Melbourne and Manchester, Benny’s production on several Freekwency singles, Nite Class’s “Love Scenes LP” and recent writing/arrangement work as head of labels Hot Shot Sounds and Gulf Point Records has not gone unnoticed. Joining the roster at London’s ISM Records, his latest outing “Seal The Deal” has Freekwency picking up where Hardcastle left off, taking the sweet and syrupy hallmarks of 80s Electro Funk into uncharted territory once again.
Benny spent his early years as a vinyl collector with strong interests in vintage audio and traditional production techniques. This groundwork would culminate in his first musical outgoing: Nite Class. With close friends De Konichiwa and Penelope Shum, Benny wrote and produced a prolific collection of songs in the style of his favourite records from the past. Their debut album “Love Scenes” was instantly regarded as a
modern classic in the genre, being likened to groups such as S.O.S Band and The Cool Notes.
Moving to the vibrant city of Melbourne had Benny writing more music than ever, taking his sound to much wider audiences. In 2012 he began Hot Shot Sounds with childhood friend and kindred spirit Inkswel, the label quickly grabbing attention with distribution by the infamous Peoples Potential Unlimited. With a mass of opportunity beckoning him, Benny relocated to Manchester in 2013 to mirror his operation in Australia. The outcome was Gulf Point Records, his home-‐away-‐from-‐home and a launching pad for new projects created in the north.
2014 is an open book for Freekwency and a new frontier for Benny Badge, the man behind the curtains. Stay tuned for more releases on Hot Shot Sounds, Gulf Point and various other labels.
